We've just launched our latest competition Patterned Type which is all about combining wonderful typography with pattern. Therefore I was thrilled to hear from Faye of Faye Brown Design with details of The Art of Typography.
This 2-3 week course is for anyone with an interest in typography, from
artists, graphic designers and illustrators to people who have to
regularly make presentations. Whether you are a complete beginner to
typography or need to refresh your passion for type the course will be
inspiring, informative and fun.
The Art of Typography will take you on a journey through typefaces and
how to use them effectively. Looking into the history or type and the
anatomy of typography .
The course will look at how brands use typefaces to enhance their brand
values and clever ways of using letterforms. There will be lots of fun
exercises including how to design your own typefaces before embarking on
your final project.
The final project will encourage
students to draw on all their new found knowledge and love for type to
create a typographic illustration of a favourite quote or lyric.
Students will be encouraged to share their projects and thoughts in what
will be a very interactive course. There will be plenty of
opportunities for feedback.
The course will be taught in a variety of ways from lecture videos, slide shows and downloadable resources.
The course will cover the following topics:
Intro - Typefaces and communication
A Brief History of Type
The Anatomy of Typography
Brands and logotypes
Creating your own typefaces
Movie night
Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of photoshop or
illustrator is preferable but not essential. There will be a basic
tutorial. We will also explore hand drawn type in detail so don't worry
if computers aren't for you!

Submerge in the wonderful world of patterns, and learn how to use the basic Illustrator tools to bring to life your ideas. You'll learn how to create a repeat both old-school and using Illustrator CS6 new Pattern Tool. I'll share with you my very own design methodology for you to create beautiful and functional designs from scratch. At the end of the class you'll be able to create your own repeats for you to use however you want; for example, to sell your own fabric on
Spoonflower.
