Every Christmas we need to refresh our ranges with new and innovative styles.
Throughout the Christmas ranges we design wrap, bags, boxes, crackers and cards, all of which require Christmas icons and patterns to make them truly festive.
The brief:
Your aim is to produce new and inspiring surface pattern designs to work across roll wrap, bags, boxes or cards that are suitable for Christmas 2011.
Most high street stores have launched their Christmas ranges so go and get inspired by the new styles that you see both in the shops and online.
Consider icons such as; snowflakes, stars, candy canes, gingerbread men, trees, presents, Santa, angels, fairys, stockings, robins, holly, mistletoe etc, and think about how these icons can be worked up into patterns thinking about placement and scale.
Be creative with the techniques you use, maybe try kraft paper, foiled paper, different printed qualities, flittered or holographic papers.
Icons could be drawn by hand, painted, computer generated, lino/screen printed, stitched, photographed or cut out and then scanned and worked up into a Christmas pattern or formatted as a placement design.
It is important that you think about the M&S customer. They are going to want to see something that truly represents Christmas and nothing to abstract or ‘out there’.
Make sure you stick to a Christmas colour palette using the inspiration below:
Below are a few examples for inspiration of product that has featured in previous ranges.
