The Spots & Stripes brief was one tough cookie! You would think at first glance that the brief was pretty straight forward but in fact it’s pretty tough going to come up with a new take on the classic spot or stripe. This is a challenge we regularly put to our in-house designers as the spot and stripe are core pieces in our everyday ranges each year.
As always we had a great time judging and this month we were joined by the lovely Louise Harrison who is currently with us on placement following her winning entry from the Black & White Print Competition last year.
I think Louise would agree that it’s a tough job looking through all the entries with our judges and deciding which designs best answer the brief.
There were some really great designs and very commercial too but a few of the designs were very similar to what we already do or have done in the past. However we loved how you had fun with this brief and pushed yourselves out of your comfort zones by using material and techniques that you may not use on a regular basis. It was great to see collage, hand drawn, painterly and photography coming through in some of the entries.
The winning entry above by Candy Joyce is a really fresh and commercial take on the brief. It is also a very adaptable design which with a few tweaks of the colour palette could be utilized across the market for both male and females and even adapted for kids! Congratulations Candy!
This month the judges selected two runners up as follows:
By Heidi
We really loved the simplicity and colour palette of this design and how Heidi cleverly incorporate type into the design. Overall it is a very commercial design which could work for a variety of occasions. Well done Heidi.
By Kate Yorke
We really loved how Kate used a collage technique to get a great sense of layering and texture into her design. Well done Kate.
A really big thank you to everyone that took the time and effort to enter and as always we really do appreciate all that goes in to your entries and it really is great to get the opportunity to work with as many of you as we can.
Next up we have the Colour Competition which is a collaboration with the team over at the Society of Dyers and Colourists over on our brand new website.
This blog will of course continue to run with updates but the competition briefs and entries will now be hosted on our brand new website.
